on enchantment

'Limited competence causes us to behave clumsily, suffer misunderstandings, be surprised by events, and fail to predict outcomes beyond chance. Yet with these difficulties comes an opening for enchantment: our very awkwardness can suggest powers or principles at work that are not just beyond our ken but quite possibly of another order. In contrast, where we are fully competent not only does our awkwardnss disappear, but the enchantment along with it. The ease with which we negotiate the world and our failure to be surprised by its behavior underscore the ultimate intelligibility of the circumstances in which we live.'
